Day 1: Arizona to Lima, Peru

Day 1 (September 15th)

Left Mesa, AZ at 12:50am..Stop in Dallas/ Fort Worth. 6 hour layover in Fort Lauderdale and (finally) Arrived in Lima Peru 11:00pm

(Sometimes you have to sleep on airport floors while waiting for your next flight....especially after flying all night.)

After 23 LONG hours of flying, we had made it to PERU (which means I GOT A STAMP IN MY PASSPORT).   It was very overwhelming to walk out of the baggage claim area to try to find Luis (my brother's friend) and his sister.  We got into Lima around 11pm and were so grateful to have someone there to help us.  Luis and his sister drove us back to their house.

Things I noticed on my drive to Luis' house: 1) driving in Lima is crazy and confusing- glad we didn't have to drive 2) it was a little scary 3) Luis told me to roll my window up when we were stopped at lights- I didn't ask why and I didn't want to find out why either.  4) I was glad when we pulled up to Luis' house where dinner was waiting for us!  And after having a 6 hour layover in Florida and then another 6 hour flight to Lima- we were pretty famished.

Our first course was papa a la huancaina. Which is boiled potatoes with a creamy sauce over (served cold) and topped with a slice of hard boiled egg and an olive. It is delicious.

Our main course was arroz con pollo.  Translated into English... rice with chicken.
This was so tasty.  My mouth is salivating while looking at this picture.

I loved sitting around the table with Luis and his family. I loved learning more about their culture and how they live. I loved their kind hospitality.  I am thankful Luis gave up his bed for Chad and I to sleep on for the night.  This was the most welcoming family I have ever met.  I went to bed that night with such a thankful heart. And it was pretty nice to sleep in a bed and not on an airport floor!

South America Intro

The last half of September was spent traveling. Chad and I made our first international trip together. We spent 15 beautiful days traveling through 3 countries.

Here we are at the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway airport. We had just made it through security. That little cinna-bear backpack (Dueter 40+10 Liters from REI) was what I took for 15 days. (And then a big
purse).  We flew Spirit Airlines.  We were excited because our flights down to Lima Peru were around $300 a person.  We wanted to make traveling as easy as we could and not have alot of baggage to haul around.  Flying Spirit, they charge not only for checked baggage but also for a carry on (I think its ridiculous).

As we were waiting to board our plane, we played a game of UNO.  (Chad was playing solitaire on his computer.)  While we were playing, this guy kept watching us and then asked what we were doing.  We introduced him to this wonderful game and had to take a picture to document the start of our adventure!
